Woman-to-woman abuse as a result of internalized patriarchy

Writer's picture: Nyasha B DubeNyasha B Dube

In many African cultures, including in Zimbabwe, women are often expected to embody specific roles and adhere to traditional norms. However, these norms can sometimes turn toxic, leading to harmful dynamics between women, particularly within families. This pattern is deeply rooted in patriarchal structures that perpetuate gender inequality.

Mothers-in-Law and Daughters-in-Law

One of the most common sources of conflict arises from the relationship between mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law. In some cultures, the mother-in-law is viewed as the gatekeeper to family acceptance, and the daughter-in-law must undergo a series of trials to prove her worth. These "initiation rites" can include performing domestic chores and enduring verbal and emotional abuse. In severe cases, this abuse can escalate to physical violence, resulting in injuries and lasting trauma.

Rivalries Among Sisters-in-Law

Another significant source of conflict is the rivalry between sisters-in-law. Jealousy, competition and the desire to outshine one another can lead to hurtful words, backbiting and even physical confrontations. Such conflicts can have devastating consequences, leading to emotional distress, fractured family relationships and social isolation.

The Cycle of Violence and Oppression

These harmful practices are not merely cultural traditions; they are forms of abuse that can have serious consequences for women's mental and physical health. By perpetuating the idea that women are rivals for the attention and affection of men, these cultures reinforce a cycle of violence and oppression. It is crucial to recognize that these dynamics are rooted in patriarchal norms that undermine women's solidarity and well-being.
