8th of March is more than Flowers: The Ongoing Fight for Women’s Rights

Writer: Beatriz FreitasBeatriz Freitas

womens day

In March 1908, following the tragic death of 140 young workers in a factory fire, around 30,000 striking workers took to the streets of New York City to demand shorter working hours, better pay, and voting rights. Today, we continue to echo these demands, and more!

International Women’s Day is approaching, and as always, it’s important to remember that this day is not about flowers, but about the ongoing fight for rights and justice. The origins of this date are deeply connected to women’s participation in the labor market and their struggle for equal rights, and this fight is far from over.

We still have so much to demand: a society that allows women to make decisions about their bodies, a workplace that supports women when they choose to have children, equal pay for equal work, and the right to live free from gender-based violence, whether sexual, emotional, physical, or financial. Women will only be truly free when all of us are free.

There’s no better way to honour this day than to take action and engage with community-driven causes. That’s why we’ve compiled a list of events (most are free!) happening in London this week; all you need to do is register. If you’re in London this weekend and feel that this is a cause worth supporting, we invite you to set aside a few hours to participate in these movements. You’ll have the opportunity to connect with women who share your views, allies who support the cause, and non-binary individuals working to make these events happen.

Let’s remember that this day is about political action and collective support. This is how we grow as women, through organic, grassroots resistance that is just as important as organised protests on other dates. London is rich in activism and opportunities for engagement, and we hope this post helps you find an event that speaks to you or that you help spread the word so others can participate.

The fight for women’s rights is a fight for social emancipation. That’s why participation and representation in these events are so meaningful. We need diverse voices; voices from different cultures, languages, and lived experiences, to strengthen this movement and claim the spaces that belong to us.

Our presence matters in cities, debates, academia, friendships, and families.
