Our First Breakfast Circle

On Saturday, 30 August 2024, we gathered for our very first Breakfast Circle. What started as an idea, a vision of creating a dignified and safe space where GBV survivors can meet, heal and grow, blossomed into a morning filled with warmth, connection and hope.

The sun rose beautifully that morning, and with it came an atmosphere of joy. As the ladies arrived, there was a sense of anticipation, gentle smiles, warm embraces and the reassurance of being among sisters who understand. Around a table prepared with steaming cups of tea and coffee, fresh plates of food and a spirit of togetherness, we discovered that what we were really serving was community.

At the Breakfast Circle, we shared much more than meals:
💛 We shared laughter that softened heavy hearts.
💛 We shared stories, some filled with pain, others with renewal and courage, reminding us that our voices matter and our journeys are valid.
💛 We shared encouragement and advice, drawing from individual experiences to uplift the whole group.
💛 We shared prayers and affirmations, anchoring ourselves in faith and hope for brighter days.

What made the morning even more meaningful was the way everyone participated. Each woman had a role in preparing the meals and setting the space. In doing so, the Circle became more than an event, it became a symbol of rebuilding community, restoring dignity and reminding each survivor that she is not defined by what happened to her but by the strength she carries forward.
We were reminded that healing does not always come in grand gestures, it comes in the small, gentle spaces where one feels safe enough to be seen and heard. For many women, this Circle was not just about sharing food; it was about reclaiming normalcy, nurturing resilience and remembering they are not walking this journey alone.

Through this platform, we want every survivor who walks into Bertha’s Place to leave knowing that:
✨ They are loved.
✨ They are not alone.
✨ Their story matters.
✨ Together, we are stronger.

The connections formed that Saturday morning will ripple far beyond those few hours. Women left not only with fuller hearts but also with renewed courage and the reminder that their voices and their lives hold immeasurable value.

At Bertha’s Place, we are committed to creating sustainable spaces where healing, sisterhood and empowerment flourish. The Breakfast Circle will continue to grow, building community, fostering new skills and helping every woman we serve rediscover her strength.
To the women who joined us, thank you for trusting the space, for sharing your truth and for reminding us that even after the darkest of nights, the morning always shines.
