Discovering Healthy Relationships: Hill City Youth Conference
On 4 July, Bertha’s Legacy delivered its first Discovering Healthy Relationships workshop at a youth conference hosted by Hill City Church. The faith-based session brought together young people aged 10 to 16 to explore what healthy love and relationships should look and feel like.
The discussion revealed how early harmful beliefs can take root. One ten-year-old participant expressed the view that striking a woman could be an acceptable way to “correct” her behaviour. Some girls also believed that a woman should not challenge a man because he is the head of the household. These moments were met without shame and used to open honest, age-appropriate conversations about respect, equality, safety and abuse. They also reinforced why these discussions must begin early, before harmful ideas become accepted as normal.
Using 1 Corinthians 13 as its definition of love, the workshop introduced the SAFE framework:
See: Recognise healthy, concerning and harmful behaviour.
Ask: Question pressure, control and messages presented as love.
Form: Develop boundaries and standards rooted in safety, respect and consent.
Embody: Practise and model healthy relationship behaviours.
Participants were encouraged to understand that love is patient and kind. It does not control, humiliate, frighten or cause harm.
