Socio-Economic Abuse

Socio-economic abuse is all about controlling or limiting someone’s access to financial resources, education, and job opportunities to exert power over them. This form of abuse can take several shapes:

  • Financial Control: The abuser might handle all financial decisions, restrict access to money, or constantly monitor how the victim spends their funds. This leaves the victim feeling financially dependent and unable to make independent choices.

  • Economic Deprivation: In many cases, the abuser prevents the victim from seeking education or employment, withholds money for basic needs, or actively sabotages their ability to earn a living. This keeps the victim trapped in a cycle of dependency, making it incredibly hard to break free.

  • Exploitation: The abuser might take advantage of the victim's labor or resources for their own gain without offering fair compensation. This could mean forcing the victim to work without control over their wages or seizing their property.

  • Isolation from Economic Support: Abusers often isolate victims from family, friends, and support services, making it even harder for them to access financial help or escape the abusive situation.

The impacts of socio-economic abuse can be long-lasting and devastating. Victims may find themselves in financial ruin, struggling to access education, healthcare, housing, or employment.

This creates significant barriers to leaving abusive relationships, as the fear of financial instability or homelessness can be paralyzing.

If you or someone you know is facing this kind of abuse, it’s important to seek support and understand that there are pathways to regain independence and stability.
